Nitrogen for Grass Farming Note

Efficient use of nitrogen fertiliser provides environmental and economic benefits. The high cost of fertiliser increases the need to ensure grassland fertiliser is carefully targeted to produce the required grass output using the minimum amount of nitrogen fertiliser. The new systems based approach to grassland fertiliser recommendations published by DEFRA in the new RB209 fertiliser manual (8th edition) aims to do this.Careful calculation of fertiliser requirements after taking account of nitrogen from manure will further reduce the amount of bought-in fertiliser required and the cost of forage production.

This Farming Note covers:

  • Fertiliser N for grass production
  • Nitrogen fertiliser recommendations
  • An accompanying worksheet for calculating your field requirements

Issued February 2011.
