Successful Lambing

Course Information

Welcome to Successful Lambing, this course has been developed to help you navigate through lambing time and to understand what “successful lambing” means for you; producing healthy viable lambs, ensuring the health and welfare of ewes, alongside industry demands to reduce antibiotic use and the impact livestock farming has on the environment.

The course will start before lambing time even begins and will introduce you to the key factors that you can control in order to deliver a successful lambing: Ensuring the ewes are fit and healthy as well as having the correct facilities and equipment you will need. We will also discuss what information to record at lambing time, so you can benchmark against national data.

We then move on to lambing time itself focusing on when to intervene to lamb a ewe, how to do this safely including how to identify the lambs presentation and correctly apply ropes to help delivery.

Finally we cover the basic techniques and interventions such as stomach tubing and castration, how you can do this safely, legally and when these procedures are appropriate. 

Throughout the course we will teach you how to identify common problems of the ewe and lamb at various times from mating to turn out. How to treat these problems and more importantly to understand the causes so you can put measures in place to reduce the chance of the same problems repeating at future seasons.
