BSL Broad Spectrum Leaf Analysis
Plant Tissue Testing for sulphur deficiency in grassland soils.
Because routine soil analysis cannot be used to accurately predict sulphur deficiency, plant tissue testing is used instead. When there is not enough sulphur compared with the amount of nitrogen in your soil, the grass plant will still take up the nitrogen, but it cannot turn it into protein properly. Instead, the unused nitrogen builds up as nitrates, which also compromises the sugar levels in the grass. This leads to less palatable grazing and can cause poor fermentation in grass silage.
Forage should be tested for S when grass is growing rapidly in spring or during aftermath growth following silage cuts.
This analysis tests fresh grass for: N P K Ca Mg S B Cu Fe Mn Mo Zn
In grass, total S less than 0.25%, or an N:S ratio of more than 13:1 indicates sulphur deficiency.
