Calf Shed Hygiene Workbook

Pathogens causing disease in calves are ever-present in the environment, so while eradication is impossible, reducing exposure is essential. Ultimately, whether a calf thrives or succumbs to illness depends on the balance between immunity and challenge. The aim should be to boost a calf’s immunity (ability to resist disease), whilst also lowering the disease challenge in the environment.

Immunity-led prevention begins as the calf is born, with exceptional colostrum management. This is addressed in our Dairy Insight publication The Importance of Colostrum Management, while colostrum hygiene is covered in Colostrum Hygiene and Storage Dairy Insight.

This Dairy Insight will therefore focus exclusively on other non-colostrum hygiene factors within the calf shed. Exploring proactive measures that can be taken to improve calf health on farm.
