Controlling Cryptosporidium Dairy Insight
Cryptosporidium remains one of the most frustrating calf diseases on UK dairy farms. Once established, it is notoriously difficult to eliminate because the parasite survives for months in the environment and spreads rapidly between young calves. Preventing infection relies on a combination of strong immunity, excellent hygiene, and reduced environmental contamination.
In this Dairy Insight, we take a closer look at cryptosporidiosis, the leading cause of diarrhoea in newborn and pre-weaned calves. We explore the disease, its symptoms and the key risk factors on farm, highlighting practical areas where management changes may help reduce the number of cases.
