Sand Cubicles – The Gold Standard? Farming Note
Well maintained sand cubicles can provide an excellent bed for milking cows. If kept clean, sand does not support bacterial growth and can therefore present a lower mastitis challenge compared to other bedding options. The downside of sand cubicles however is handling sand laden slurry.
This Farming Note covers:
- Deep and shallow sand bed cubicles
- Storing and handling sand
- Pathogen load comparison of sand and sawdust
- Is sand right for me?
Issued November 2006.
